ABOUT US

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COUNCIL

The Igbo Council of Chiefs / Nze Na Ozo Canada was formed by Igbo traditional title holders in Canada who recognized the need for a credible, organized, and culturally grounded body to uphold the dignity of Igbo traditional institutions in the diaspora.

The council emerged from the growing concern that chieftaincy titles must be protected from abuse, political misuse, commercialization, and unverified claims. Through its bylaws and constitution, the council seeks to bring structure, discipline, unity, and cultural legitimacy to the practice and recognition of Igbo traditional titles in Canada.

Mission of the council:

To preserve, protect, and promote the dignity, authenticity, and cultural significance of Igbo traditional chieftaincy institutions in Canada and the diaspora

Vision of the council:

To become the respected umbrella body for recognized Igbo traditional title holders in Canada, promoting unity, cultural continuity, ethical leadership, and the preservation of Igbo heritage for future generations.

Cultural preservation, dignity, authenticity, integrity, unity, accountability, respect for Igbo tradition, service to community, and responsible leadership.

Primary objectives of the council

To uphold the integrity of Igbo traditional titles in the diaspora.
To create a platform for recognized title holders living in Canada.
To discourage the abuse, commercialization, and indiscriminate proliferation of Igbo chieftaincy titles.
To promote Igbo culture, values, language, customs, and traditional leadership.
To serve as a verification and advisory body on matters relating to Igbo traditional titles in Canada.
To foster unity among Igbo chiefs, Nze na Ozo title holders, Ndi Iyom, and the broader Igbo community.
